Should I Upgrade To A 4K Monitor? What To Consider Before You Shop
4K displays provide 4x more pixels than 1080p HD monitors and are a great investment if you are a gamer, use your desktop computer for professional purposes like photo editing, or just want to watch videos, browse the web, and use your computer while benefiting from enhanced visual detail.
But is a 4K monitor right for you? Here are a few questions you may want to consider before you start shopping for a 4K monitor at a computer store.
Do You Have Enough Desk Space?
4K monitors are usually at least 27 inches wide and have large and bulky stands due to their size and weight. If you have a small desk, you may not have enough room for a 4K monitor.
However, you may be able to mount the monitor on your wall or on a monitor arm using a VESA mount, so this is an option if you have a smaller space to work with, but still want a 4K monitor.
Can Your Computer Handle A 4K Monitor?
4K is 4x the resolution of 1080p, so you need a relatively powerful PC to use a 4K monitor. Most desktop PCs with a dedicated graphics card (GPU) will have no trouble outputting in 4K resolution for day-to-day tasks like moving files, browsing the web, and streaming video.
However, if your desktop does not have a graphics card, or you have a laptop that does not have a discrete graphics card, it may not be able to handle this. Consult with your computer’s specs and manual to determine if it can be used to display in 4K.
Do You Want To Play Video Games At 4K?
If you answered “yes,” you may need to upgrade your GPU. To run games at high settings and a reasonable framerate at 4K resolution, you will need at least a Radeon RX 5700 XT, or an NVIDIA Geforce RTX 2070 Super, which are pricey graphics cards.
There is some good news, though. If you don’t want to upgrade your graphics card, you can still play your games at 1080p. Since 4K is exactly 4x higher resolution than 1080p, your games will still look excellent if they’re downscaled.
Do You Have A Fast Enough Internet Connection To Stream 4K?
Planning on watching 4K video on your desktop? You’ll need a relatively beefy internet connection. It’s recommended to have speeds of at least 25 Mbps to stream in 4K. If your internet connection is slower than this, you may notice visual artifacts and lower resolution streams when watching YouTube, Netflix, and other streaming video services.
